Robert J. Tomei Jr.

Principal of Tomei Law, P.C.

Education and Background

Robert is a lifetime Lake County resident, born in Libertyville, Illinois and raised in the neighboring Village of Gurnee. Robert attended Warren Township High School from 2001-05, where he distinguished himself in academics and athletics graduating with among the highest in his class and receiving All-Conference football honors. He conducted his undergraduate studies at Illinois State University as a “University Scholarship” recipient, where, in 2009, he graduated with honors with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in English Studies.

Robert was admitted to practice law in the State of Illinois on November 1, 2012. He attended law school at the Northern Illinois University College of Law from 2009-12, graduating Cum Laude in May of 2012. In November of 2012, after a brief bought working for major corporations, Robert opened Tomei Law to assist those in financial distress–specifically, representing consumer rights through foreclosure defense, bankruptcy, auto fraud, and debt collection harassment. In the fall of 2018, Robert, along with three other fine attorneys, Timothy Johnston, Alan Lenczycki, and Michael Goldberg, founded the law firm Johnston Tomei Lenczycki & Goldberg, LLC (JTLG, LLC).  JTLG is a full service law firm and in addition to an office in Gurnee shared with Tomei Law, P.C., JTLG has an office conveniently located in the heart of downtown Libertyville. Please visit the firm website for a listing of all services provided: https://www.lawjtlg.com/

Having hailed from a family with Lake County roots, it has always been an aspiration of Robert’s to practice law in the community of his upbringing. The inner drive to further that end, coupled with the desire to assist those in distress, led him to pursue a legal career in the Consumer Rights arena where he has successfully taken on consumer foes that include some of the largest banks, debt collectors, and automobile dealerships in the land and as the owner of Tomei Law, P.C. and partner of JTLG, he plans to continue that fight for justice in Consumer Rights well into the future.

Experience

Since Tomei Law’s inception, Robert has successfully negotiated settlements on behalf of his clients in a number of different contexts, both in civil matters and in criminal matters. He has also managed trials, where he has both defended and prosecuted civil claims. In addition to bringing many bankruptcy matters to speedy and positive resolutions, Robert has also managed appeals, and has successfully argued many dispositive motions in open court. Prior to starting his own practice, Robert also spent time working in personal injury as well as insurance defense firms as both a clerk and lawyer.

Publications

While attending law school, Robert became a board member of the NIU Law Review where he was published in a piece advocating the declaration of the unconstitutionality of a controversial Illinois criminal statute that made the audio-recording of on-duty police officers and other public servants a class 1 felony offense. Watching the Watchmen: The People’s Attempt to Hold On-Duty Law Enforcement Officers Accountable for Misconduct and the Illinois Law that Stands in their Way, 32 N. Ill. U. L. Rev. 385 (2012). Shortly after publication, in the case of ACLU v. Alvarez, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit struck down the divisive law at issue in Robert’s publication, espousing many of the same legal arguments he used in his work.

Volunteer Work

Robert has volunteered his time at the Lake County Foreclosure Help Desk, where he provides a short presentation to self represented individuals regarding the foreclosure process. Robert also volunteered time at the Chicago Legal Clinic’s Chancery Advice Desk in downtown Chicago where he provided pro bono (free) assistance to pro se litigants facing foreclosure by assisting with motions, answers and case overview.
